Self-Publishing

Self-publishing is the process of publishing a book (or other media) independently without using a traditional publishing company. The author takes full responsibility for writing, editing, designing, formatting, pricing, marketing, and distributing the book β usually with the help of self-publishing platforms and print-on-demand (POD) services.
Popular platforms include Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, Lulu, Barnes & Noble Press, and Apple Books for Authors.
Self-publishing platforms / companies typically offer:
- Print-on-demand printing (no upfront inventory)
- eBook conversion & distribution
- ISBN assignment (free or paid)
- Basic cover & interior formatting tools
- Online storefront / sales dashboard
- Royalties (usually 60β70% depending on price & channel)
- Optional paid services: professional editing, custom cover design, marketing tools, advertising credits, etc.
They do **not** usually provide developmental editing, marketing campaigns, or bookstore placement unless you pay extra.
Costs vary greatly depending on whether you DIY or hire professionals:
- Completely free route: $0 (using KDP or similar free tools + your own editing/cover)
- Basic professional quality: $300β$1,500 (editing + cover design + formatting)
- High-quality / competitive: $1,500β$5,000+ (full editing rounds, custom illustrations, marketing)
- Printing: $0 upfront with POD (cost deducted from each sale)
- ISBNs, ads, website, ARC reviews, etc.: extra $100β$1,000+
Many successful indie authors start under $1,000 total.
Print-on-Demand means books are printed only after a customer places an order. There is no need to print and store hundreds/thousands of copies upfront.
How it works:
- You upload your book files (interior PDF + cover PDF) to a POD platform
- Customer buys your book (via Amazon, your website, bookstore, etc.)
- The POD company prints the book in 1β5 days
- They ship directly to the customer
- You earn royalty = sale price β printing cost β platform fees
Biggest POD providers: Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Lulu, BookBaby (some hybrid), Blurb.
Yes β most major retailers are accessible to self-published authors:
- Amazon: via KDP (easiest & biggest market)
- Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Google Play: via aggregators like Draft2Digital, PublishDrive, Smashwords, StreetLib
- Physical bookstores & libraries: via IngramSpark (gives you wholesale access through Ingram β same distributor most traditional publishers use)
Note: Physical bookstores rarely stock indie books on shelves unless you personally pitch them, but they can order your book for customers.
Yes β in almost all legitimate self-publishing platforms (KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, Lulu, etc.), you retain 100% of the copyright and publishing rights.
You grant the platform a **non-exclusive license** to print and distribute your book, but you can:
- Publish with other platforms at the same time
- Withdraw your book anytime
- Sell publishing rights to a traditional publisher later
- Use your own ISBN (recommended for maximum control)
Be cautious with vanity presses or βhybridβ publishers that demand exclusive rights or very high fees β those are often not true self-publishing.
